How To Choose The Right Carpet Cleaning Company
Before you start calling cleaning companies, know what you want done to ensure that you don't get pressured into purchasing services you do not want or need.
Your family, friends and neighbors are good sources for references. A reputable cleaning professional should have available a list of satisfied clients or businesses that use their services.
Read your carpet's warranty. If your carpet is new, find out if any special cleaning methods are recommended by the manufacturer. When obtaining estimate don't base your choice solely on who's offering the best price. Extremely low prices should also set off warning signals. Companies that advertise very low prices may be practicing what is called "bait" advertising. Once the workers arrive in your home, they quickly suggest a more expensive treatment for the cleaning.
Find out what you get for your money. Just as pricing can differ from company to company, so can the services included in the price and what the company considers as "extras." You should understand all terms, such as room size limitation, and costs of the work and ensure that the company is insured and bonded.
Inquire about the company's employees. Does the company use its own employees or do they subcontract the job to other companies? Who is responsible if the crew damages the carpet or other items in your home?
Once cleaning is complete, find out what care is required afterward. How long will it take to dry? What kind of ventilation is needed?
You'll find that professional maintenance of your carpet by the right company will not only improve the appearance and feel of your home, it also will help extend the life of your carpet and save you money in the long run.

Carpet Cleaning Methods
The Carpet Cleaning Methods are:
Hot Water Extraction (Steam Cleaning)
Shampoo
Dry Foam
Bonnet
Dry Compound
1. Hot water Extraction(Steam Cleaning):
Hot Water Extraction" or "Steam Cleaning" is the cleaning method that most carpet manufacturers and carpet fiber producers recommend. This is the only cleaning method classified as "deep cleaning". All the others are considered "light surface cleaning" because they are incapable of removing soil deep in the pile. Also, all other methods leave large amounts of cleaning agent in the carpet after cleaning.
This method is frequently called "steam" cleaning due to the fine spray of water used to force dirt out of the carpet which is sucked up by the vacuum slot immediately in front of the spray. Seldom is real live steam used, however. This process consists of spraying a solution of water and detergent into the carpet pile and recovering the water and soil with a powerful vacuum into a holding tank.
2. Shampoo:
Wet shampoo cleaning is done with rotary machines, followed by thorough wet vacuuming. This method has very good agitation and is best suited for low pile commercial carpet or low cut pile carpet that is highly soiled. This method, unless it is used with some other type of carpet cleaning, has no extraction in the cleaning process but rather relies on vacuuming after the shampoo dries. Because of the large amounts of cleaning product residue it leaves, this method is not recommended for most cut pile residential carpet. It also can have long drying times associated with it.
3. Dry Foam:
This method is very similar to shampooing. The dry foam cleaning on your carpet is done by the dry foam machine. Even though as the name implies, it is not that it involve complete dryness as it has low moisture. That is 90% air and 10% liquid. So, the dry foam machine is made of pressure tank that need you to put a solution of water and shampoo into. This does allow for faster drying times. Although some dry foam machines have a built in vacuum they still rely on the cleaning product drying to a flaky residue that the dirt adheres to and being sucked away by a vacuum cleaner. This method has the same weaknesses as Shampooing with the additional one of not being able to deep clean.
4. Bonnet:
After club soda mixed with cleaning product is deposited onto the surface as mist, a round buffer or "bonnet" scrubs the mixture with rotating motion. This industry machine resembles a floor buffer, with an absorbent spin pad that attracts soil and is rinsed or replaced repeatedly. This method has the advantage of drying very quickly because of the small amount of moisture used. It generally does a good job of cleaning the top third of the carpet pile. But does little to remove the heavier grit and sand that damages carpet over time. Because there is no flushing action or extraction, there is very little deep cleaning.
5. Dry Compound:
With this method, A dry absorbent compound containing detergent and solvent may be spread evenly over the carpet and worked into the pile using machines. The dirt and grime is attracted to the absorbent dry compound and are removed by vacuuming, leaving carpet immediately clean and dry. This method has the fastest drying times of all carpet cleaning methods and has the advantage of being able to be walked on almost immediately after cleaning. Similar to the Bonnet method, dry compound cleaning does a fairly good job of cleaning the top third of the fiber that is visible and does very little to remove the heavier soils in the base of the carpet.

Carpet Cleaning Can Make All the Difference: A Guide to Less Bacteria
Bacteria are tiny microorganisms that exist virtually everywhere on Earth. The only places devoid of bacteria are the ones that have been manually sterilized by humans. While you cannot see bacteria with the naked eye, they are visible under a microscope. Carpets are one part of the home that’s particularly likely to harbor potentially harmful bacteria, but careful cleaning can help reduce bacteria levels in your carpets and other areas.
What Are Bacteria?
Bacteria are single-cell organisms. Bacteria fall into three different categories according to their shape: round, cylindrical, and spiral. Most types of bacteria multiply via binary fission, replicating their DNA to create new cells. A few types of bacteria reproduce by a process called “budding.” As bacteria reproduce, they usually vary their genetic material for future survival and to enable them to adapt to their surrounding environment.
The Dangers of Bacteria
Some types of bacteria are beneficial, while others are harmful. The human digestive system is home to specific types of beneficial bacteria that help with digestion and help to keep the immune system strong. Other bacteria can be detrimental to human health, causing illnesses and infections. Escherichia coli and streptococcus are among the most common harmful bacteria. Once a bacterium enters a host, it will try to multiply quickly. Sometimes, a person may have immunity to a specific type of bacteria, either naturally or from a vaccine. When immunity is present, the body will eliminate the bacteria without illness occurring, but if it is not, the person will fall ill: The bacteria will multiply quickly, and symptoms of infection will occur. Antibiotics may be necessary to help the body eradicate the bacteria.
Why Carpets Hold Bacteria
Carpets can trap and hold dirt that people track into the house on their shoes, and outdoor pets may also bring in germs on their feet. Bacteria can hide in the carpet fibers, and it may also settle down into the padding and backing of the carpet. Carpets hold much more dust and dirt than hard flooring because they are much more porous. The norovirus is a particularly common carpet-dwelling germ, and it is often responsible for causing gastrointestinal problems for humans. It can remain alive in carpet fibers for up to six weeks, and when people walk over the carpet, the bacteria can become airborne. Salmonella could also be lurking in carpet fibers, tracked in on shoes. If carpets become damp, campylobacter bacteria may fester in the carpet fibers. This type of bacteria is often found in moist environments where mold and mildew are thriving. For this reason, experts usually recommend that anytime carpet, padding, and backing become fully saturated, replacement is necessary.
How to Properly Clean a Carpet
Regular vacuuming is crucial for keeping carpets clean. For best results, vacuum carpets one or two times per week with a vacuum cleaner that has a high-efficiency particulate air filter to capture as many particles as possible. At least one cleaning per week should involve four minutes of vacuuming over every square meter of carpeting. Steam cleaning is effective for removing bacteria from carpeting, and this method is preferred because it does not introduce excessive moisture during the cleaning process, which could lead to mold issues. So-called “dry steam cleaning” is another option for carpets, and this method is beneficial because it saturates the carpet less so that the backing does not get wet. It’s possible to rent steam cleaning equipment, or you could hire a professional to perform the work. Steam cleaning carpets twice each year is the general recommendation to keep flooring clean. Anyone with pets or small children and those with environmental allergies may wish to steam clean their carpets more frequently to reduce the number of allergens and bacteria in the fibers.

How to Correctly Clean Your Area Rug
A Clean area rug will add comfort and style to your home. However, area rugs especially in high traffic areas are exposed to wear and tear on a daily basis. They trap dust, dirt, odor due to smoking, pet accidents and spills from normal daily usage. Having your area rug properly clean on a regular basis will prolong the life your rug.
Carpet cleaning for delicate area rugs:
Carpet cleaners are frequently mistaken for area rug cleaners. However, the process of carpet cleaning is completely different than the one for area rug cleaning. Carpet cleaners come to your home and steam clean your area rug. They add harsh carpet cleaners to wash your area rug which may result in discoloration or over wetting of your area rug. The carpeting or wood flooring under area rugs can be damaged in the process, not only due to possible discoloration from bleeding dyes but also from the dampness and humidity of a wet rug. This process is standard for synthetic wall-to-wall carpeting but is not appropriate and is often damaging to delicate, handmade and natural fiber rugs, such as wool and silk.
Do-it-yourself area rug cleaning:
Some homeowner take their rugs outside and power wash them, some even wash their rugs using the garden hose and shampoo. This method of cleaning is not recommended for the cleaning of area rug because it may result to irreversible damage. Also we do not recommend the spot cleaning of area rugs using store bought carpet shampoos and detergents. These harsh cleaners are designed for wall-to-wall carpeting with synthetic fibers and are not designed for natural fiber rugs. Area rugs have rich dyes that may easily bleed and discolor not only the rug itself but also the floor underneath.
Professional area rug cleaning:
Area rugs should to be cleaned regularly and they also need to be cleaned correctly to avoid damaging them. An improper cleaning method can ruin your area rug, thus ruining your investment. To keep your beautiful area rugs healthy for a long time, call your local professional area rug cleaners. They actually take the time to analyze your rug and determine which cleaning process would work best.
Professional area rug cleaning process:
Professional area rug cleaners come to your home to inspect your rug. They analyze the fibers, dyes, origin and condition of the rug to determine the appropriate cleaning method. They take the time to answer questions and give an estimate for the proposed work. Once you satisfied with the information, your rug is taken to a dedicated facility where it is dusted to remove dirt and small particles. Your rug is then hand cleaned and gently rinsed to avoid color runs. Just like the washing process is particular to your rug, so is the drying method specific to the type of rug as well. Some rugs are hung to dry naturally, while others are dried flat . No harsh chemicals are ever used to wash or dry your area rugs. After vacuuming and grooming the rug one more time, there is a final inspection to make sure the results are satisfactory. If they are not, the process is repeated. Once the area rug is looking and smelling great, the area rug is then delivered back to you home.
Characteristic of Wool Shag Area Rug
Shag rugs today come in all shapes, sizes and materials. It is a great decorative idea but it is a very difficult to keep clean. We also have a vast variety of wool shag rugs ranging from spun to felted, dyed to un-dyed and some big noodle shapes to thin strands.
Some of the challenges with wool shag rugs are:
1. Shedding and piling.
Wool yarn is spun from short-piled staple fibers, so when they are shag length, they tend to fall apart. A wash can some times lessen the wool shedding of these rug but in some cases this a something you have to live with.
2. Tough to vacuum
Standard vacuum cleaners are not going to work on these rugs because the shag strand keep getting caught in the vacuum brush. You can also use a crevice tool to try to grab the large pieces of debris that are embedded into the foundation of these rugs. Smaller rugs can be taken outside to shake free loose particulate matter.
3 Tough to wash.
These rugs become extremely heavy when wet, and agitation is a challenge because of the tendency to lose fibers and for the wool rows to not easily open up to release soil from the base. Rugs with urine contamination often need longer soaking to try to remove contaminants. You also have to be careful when cleaning because these rug can sometimes shrink or become yellow if improperly cleaned.
4. Prone to moths.
If you wait too long to clean these rugs, and the rug foundations are rarely reach by a vacuum. This makes these wool susceptible to moths and carpet beetles. Bugs like dark, undisturbed places with a food source, so deep at the base of these rugs is a good place for them. Always open fibers to inspect for insect activity. Have your wool rug cleaned regularly by a professional cleaning company to prolong the life of your rug and prevent moth infestation.
Myth about Carpet Cleaning
The only reason to clean your carpets is to remove the soil and improve the appearance
Fact 1:
Outdoor air contains pollen, fungus, bacteria, cigarette smoke, carbon monoxide and hundreds of other harmful chemicals. When you open your windows and you or your family member come into your home, you carry those pollutants in your hair, skin, clothing and shoes, this end up on your carpets. Carpet cleaning is not just about removing soil and improving the appearance of your home; It’s is about protecting your family and safeguarding their health by removing pollutants and contaminants that can affect your quality of life.
Myth 2:
I was told once you have your carpet cleaned, you always have to have them cleaned.
Fact 2:
Carpet manufacturer recommend having your carpets cleaned by a trained and qualified professional every 12 – 18 months. Also, the problem many consumers face is that many companies used a high-residual detergent that remain in the carpet long after they leave, and it continues to attract soil, causing your carpet to get dirty fast.
Myth 3:
My carpet doesn’t look dirty enough to have it cleaned at this time.
Fact 3:
Some carpets do hide soil more than others. It does not mean there is no soil to be removed. All soil, whether hidden or not, is abrasive. It can result in early wear, loss of fiber protection and even some color loss. Cleaning your carpet regularly will reduce wear, loss of color and prolong the life of your carpets. An example of the amount of dirt carpets accumulate would be from hard surface floors. At home if I don’t sweep my floor for a couple of days it accumulate a small layer of fine dust this is the type that get trap in your carpet and only having your carpet professionally clean will remove these dust and debris from your carpet.
Carpet Cleaning Machine Rental
Carpet cleaning is a skill and should be left for the professional. Most people who rent carpet cleaning machines think it is a simple task until the time comes to do doing the actual cleaning of the carpet. But it is not as simple as it looks. You have to understand the principle of cleaning and stain removal process. How does the cleaning solution works when it is applied to your carpet? What stain remover to use for coffee stain and what stain remover you use for grease stain ? These are some of the things you need to know before you attempt cleaning your carpets yourself because they are different stain remover for the different type of stain.
You also have to factor in the type of machine that is being used. Most machine are small and do not have enough water pressure or vacuuming strength to remove the dirt and stains from your carpet. The cleaning solution sold with the equipment rental is not able to remove most stain or dirt. What it actually does is move the dirt around and causing most of your stain to become permanent . Your carpet will also soil more quickly because of the soap residue that is left in your carpet.
Then look at the cost factor : You have to rent the machine , you have to buy the cleaning solution and most importantly the time spent filling and emptying the machine because of the small tank. This can be time consuming and tiring; not to mention that the end result can still leave you with a dirty carpet.
Bases on all these factor, it would be in your best interest to use a professional ; who has the skill set and equipment to get the job done right the first time around.
A Clean Carpet Equals a Healthier Home Environment
Hardwood floors have been popular in recent years, but today many homes have a combination of carpet, rugs and hardwood floors.
There are several benefits to having carpeting: It helps with noise reduction, it can look great in any room and it’s fantastic to feel a soft, cozy carpet underfoot.
While there are several benefits to having carpeting, what’s equally important is to make sure you keep your carpet clean from the dirt, stains and other messes that regular foot traffic in your home will inevitably create.
The most common way to clean your carpet is by vacuuming it, at least once a week, perhaps more depending on your family’s lifestyle. For example, do you have guests frequently visit your home, do you have pets and how many children you have?
Vacuuming is important to take out any dirt, dust and allergens that can easily be brought into the house through foot traffic and even through open windows in high-allergy seasons.
It’s also a good idea to have carpets professionally cleaned at least once a year. While you may be diligent in keeping your carpet clean, the professionals have the equipment, products and expertise to make sure your carpet is as clean as possible, removing as much of the dirt and other irritants out of your carpet.
Regular carpet cleaning will also extend the lifespan of your carpet and contribute to a healthier home environment. It will help those who may have allergies to dust and other allergens that could be hiding in your carpet.

Carpet Filtration or Darkening of the Edges
Filtration soiling is a common occurrence in both residential and commercial environments, most often in colder climates. Filtration lines are identified by the dark lines or areas of soiling you can find along walls, under doors kept closed for long periods of time, underneath the skirting of your rarely moved furniture or appliances and other similar areas. Its development is a direct result of the air quality and temperature inside your home or building. As the air inside your environment is warmed naturally or through your heating system, it rises in search of cooler spaces to heat; for example, outside walls or other rooms where the air is cooler. As the air forces its way through carpeted surfaces, the carpet acts as a filter, and pollutants in the air begin to bond to the carpet fibrers. What gets left behind over time is a build-up of oily residue that carpet cleaners across the industry acknowledge is very difficult to remove.
Many carpet cleaning services charge extra fees to remove filtration soiling. The reason for this is because carpet filtration soiling is most often found in difficult to clean areas around the home and office, like up and down staircases, in closets and along baseboards. These are areas where regular carpet agitation cleaning procedures are hard to complete.
Cleaning filtration soils properly is often a multi-step process. Preconditioning the area is the first step. This involves thoroughly working the cleaner of choice into a small area of the carpet pile and then rinsing. In most instances, there will be only a moderate improvement. At this point, more aggressive cleaning treatments are required to achieve any level of success. This could include attempts at agitation, using gel solvents or oxygen-based cleaning procedures. While there are many chemical-based formulations that can be used, you do run the risk of dis-colouring your carpets.
Mattress Cleaning
The most forsaken item of furniture that requires periodic cleaning is mattress. We spend a third of our lives sleeping on mattresses. Also body odor, sweat and urine are trapped in the body of your mattress for a long time. This create an environment for the breeding of dust mites. That is why mattress cleaning is so important. Dust mites are microscopic insects that live in your mattresses, pillow, rug and curtains and feed on people flaked-off dead skin.
The National Institute of Environmental Health Science state that 18% to 30% of humans are allergic to dust mites. In many cases allergies and respiratory illness can be trace back to your mattress. By not cleaning your mattress regularly you are compromising the health of you and your loved-ones by exposing yourself to dust-mites, bacteria and fungal spores.
A Regular cleaning of your mattress is just as important as cleaning of your carpet. Contact the local cleaning service in your area that specialize in mattress cleaning and have your mattress clean, it will result in a cleaner and healthier home.

Maintaining your Mattress
You spend more than one-third of your life sleeping, so it’s important that you are sleeping in a clean and comfortable environment. Here are some tips to keep your mattress well-maintained:
Wash your sheets a minimum of once per week. Body odour, sweat and skin cells can accumulate on your bedsheets. Cleaning your sheets more frequently will help keep dust mites away and keep your mattress in better condition.
Vacuum your mattress every month. Strip your bedsheets and vacuum your mattress to help get a deeper clean. Dust and debris can accumulate in the corners or crevices of your mattress. Use the upholstery attachment and vacuum thoroughly to help remove dirt and prevent dust mites.
Click to add an engaging title. High quality images go a long way in looking professional online.
Clean stains immediately. Clean by blotting any excess moisture, then wipe with a damp cloth. Use baking soda to help absorb moisture and odour, and don’t spray with cleaning solution. It is best to keep your mattress moisture-free to prevent the growth of mildew and mould. If you need help, hire a professional to properly clean your mattress.
Place the mattress in direct sunlight. If possible, move your mattress into the sun. Direct sunlight can help to remove odours, eliminate stains and refresh your mattress.
Use a mattress cover. Protect your mattress from spills and accidents by purchasing a mattress cover to put under your sheets. The cover won’t prevent all spills from seeping into your mattress, but it will absorb most of the mess and is much easier to clean than an entire mattress.
Flip your mattress every three to six months to allow for even wear. Rotating your mattress at regular intervals will ensure that you don’t wear out one spot sooner than another — helping your springs to last longer. Turn your mattress so that the head is now at the foot of the bed, and then reverse it in another three to six months.

A clean carpet and upholstery help keep your entire home cleaner and healthier, reduce allergens and improve the appearance of your home but there’s more you can do to maintain a clean and healthy home by including your drapes and blinds whenever you have your carpet and upholstery cleaned.
Because drapery cleaning is usually overlook when cleaning your home, they tend to be neglected for years before being cleaned. Drapes accumulated dust and odor over time. Especially if you have pets, since pet fur and dander flow throughout your home and accumulate on the surfaces including your drapes and blinds. Blinds are also collectors of dust and other particles over time. You’ve probably noticed the amount of dust that accumulates on surfaces such as floors, tabletops, window ledges. Wine Stain Removal
You may have friends over or just having a glass of wine at home after a long day at work suddenly a glass of wine spill on your white carpet or upholstery. First thing to do is not PANIC! just get a couple of towels and start blotting up the wine spill. The quicker you start blotting it up the easier it is to removed, so place the towel over the wine stain and apply pressure rotate the towel to a clean spot after each time you blot the wine stain. After you have blotted up most of the stain the next thing to do is mix a cup of hydrogen peroxide with water usually
1 cup of water with 1 cup peroxide ( dilution should be one to one ratio and it is best to use a spray bottle if you have one).
Always pretest a small area of the fabric then apply the mixture to the wine stain and blot as much as you can. After you have blotted up as much as you can repeat the process . If there is any excess wine stain left on your carpet leave the spot damp till the next day. If there is still wine residue on your carpet the next day call a professional carpet cleaning service .
I do not recommend using any store bought spot remover or the use of club soda because it may cause the stain to become permanent. Also do not scrub the wine stain when trying to remove it. You don’t have to worry when wine gets pilled on your carpet, just act quickly and remove as much liquid as you can this will help in the removal of the stain.
Pet Stains and Odor
Your carpet need special attention when there are pets in the house. Cats, dog, hamsters, and any other animals with a bladder and kidney will sometimes have an accident that will stain your carpet. Adding to the problem are bacteria, odor, and the high mineral salt content of pet urine. This may mean that untreated spots may never dry completely, especially in a humid environment. Moisture is drawn from the air into the carpet, allowing bacteria to grow and odor to continue until the area is completely cleaned and disinfected. Also, pets can sometimes permanently damage carpet, furnishings, and even walls and floors. The bacteria and dampness make ideal conditions for molds to grow. Extreme odors may require replacement of carpet, sanding and refinishing floors and replacing damaged drywall and woodwork.
There are many steps you can take to protect your carpet.
1. Attend to spots immediately by blotting followed by the use of a good spot remover designed for carpets.
2. When designing your home, consider using area rugs. Area rugs are easy to clean and they allow easy inspection and cleanup of the matting and floor underneath stains.
3. Keep your pet nails trimmed. The length of your pet nails can cause damage to your carpet and flooring.
4. Have your carpet cleaned and disinfected regularly by a professional carpet cleaner and apply carpet protector.
